Freely adapted from the novel Les meres noires by Pascal Francaiz, The Shadow Within is a supernatural thriller that narrates the story of Maurice Dumont, a nine-year-old with an enduring connection between this world and the afterlife. Propelled by unassailable grief over the death of Maurice's twin brother Jacques at birth, his mother Marie falls under the occult influence of the enigmatic Madame Armand and other women that prematurely lost their children and who try to convince her to use Maurice as a medium to the afterlife to contact their dead sons. With unrelenting pressure they seduce Marie, with the hope that the whole Dumont family will be reunited again. As Jacques asserts himself through Maurice's body, Maurice realizes that Jacques desires the same thing he does; the love and presence of their parents, but Jacques does not want to return to the world of the living, he wants his parents to join him in the afterlife.
