Parents Vicki (Cynthia Gibb) and Jason (David Millbern), married 15 years, have been separated for the past six months, and 15-year-old daughter Melissa lives with Jason, a successful partner at a powerful law firm, while 11-year-old son Will lives with housing designer Vicki. While eating lunch with her father, Melissa notices a last minute cancellation at their vacation home, and proposes spending Christmas there. Jason thinks it's a great idea and agrees to go on the spot. Meanwhile Vicki, busy at her job at the architectural firm, has captured the attention of her boss Myles (Jason Connery), a rich man used to getting his way. When Will proposes to his mother that they spend Christmas at the beach as well, Myles jumps at the chance to tell them that he will be there on business too. But unbeknownst to Jason or Vicky, Will and Melissa have set their parents up in a ploy to get them talking again, and hopefully back together.
When Vicki arrives at the vacation home with Will she's surprised to find Jason and Melissa already there, but since everyone's plans are set, Jason and Vicki agree to share the house for the holidays (Jason takes the couch). But their complicated family vacation is further complicated by the fact that Vicki's meetings with Myles are sparking jealousy from Jason, and Will decides to call in Jason's gorgeous assistant Kristine (Cassidy Freeman) to make Vicki jealous. Regardless, as Jason spends more time with Vicki, it becomes clear that this marriage is far from over, and he decides to propose to her all over again. But as Rico (James Hong), the caretaker for the beachhouse, is fond of saying, this beach is a magical place, and it will take a lot of luck, a lot of love, and a little dose of magic to bring this family back together again.
